Human Rights with Black Sash
A workshop on human rights entitled “Social Assistance in South Africa” was held in Limpopo, Tzaneen on 15 April at the Tzaneen Catholic Church in Aquar Park with 48 participants representing various organisations. The workshop was in partnership with the Black Sash Gauteng on the human rights programme. The focus was on Social Assistance and participants were informed about various child-related and adult-related grants available. Participants were more interested on the child support grant. This particular grant was debated intensely and participants expressed that government should review (increase) the amount for the child support grant as it is too little. Others debated that this grant should be done away with as it encourages women to make more children in the hope of getting this grant. Various ideas were suggested on how to administer this grant but nothing seemed to suit everyone. This topic got very heated and emotions ran high. People eventually agreed to disagree on their opinions. Black Sash gave participants their contact information should they need any assistance.
