Stand Up & Take Action 2009

Stand Up & Take Action is the largest global campaign by people to take action for a better world. The campaign took place over three days, 16th – 18th October 2009 and was one of the most successful campaigns South Africa has had in recent years. The focus was on bringing about positive social change and acting to remind leaders at G8 & G20 Summits to stay the course to build a fair and just world. This call was supported by government through the education department and the presidency of South Africa, civil society and business. Over 50 organisations took part in the campaign this year. Stand Up events were held in all nine provinces of South Africa where schools and churches also participated. Guinness World records confirmed 119 events including grouped events with 130,776 people taking part. The total number of events for South Africa reached 168 events when de-grouped. Including Big Brother Revolution, which reached over 1,900,000 people, South Africa stood up with over 2,000,000 people. The world over 173,045,325 people stood up and took action to see an end to poverty. Throughout the year organisations will work together on mutual projects to see an end to poverty and inequality for all in South Africa.
