Ahanang Soup Kitchen Print E-mail
ahanangAhanang Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organisation dedicated to caring for and feeding orphan children of HIV/AIDS victims. It was formed and is still run by a group of women in Koekoe Village in Kroonstad who not only feed the orphans, but also the elderly and those suffering from HIV/Aids who can no longer take care of themselves. History
Ahanang Soup Kitchen was established in 2006 and registered as a recognised NPO (non-profit organisation) on 23 March 2006. Its main objective is to feed needy orphans, HIV/Aids victims, elderly and disabled people. The name Ahanang was chosen because of its meaning – “build each other” – which is exactly what they are trying to do: build the community of Koekoe Village in Kroonstad.

Programmes
Awareness Programme, which encourages the community to inform the organisation of any orphans being neglected due to the death of their parents. In so doing, the organisation aims to eradicate the need for children to live on the streets because of inadequate care from their guardians.

Staff
The organisation does not employ any permanent staff members – all its members are volunteers. Approximately12 volunteers help with cooking for and taking care of orphans, the elderly, disabled people and HIV/Aids victims.

Funders
Currently the organisation does not obtain any funding, but receives help from local businesses, KFC and Pick n Pay in the form of food parcels. These parcels ensure the survival of the centre’s inhabitants.

Challenges
A lack of funds makes it difficult to run the centre. Some members who are also volunteers sometimes leave the organisation in search of a paying job to support their families. The current supply of food is also not sufficient for all the people at the centre.
The current venue poses as a challenge in that it cannot accommodate the required number of people. A bigger venue would be able to accommodate more people, but building or obtaining a bigger venue would require funds.
