Bohlale Youth Club Print E-mail
botlhaleBohlale Youth Club is a non-profit organisation formed by the youth in Kroonstad to inform and educate about the negative implications of crime, using drugs and teenage pregnancy.  Most of the organisation’s members were also victims of wrong doings, and thus remain motivated to help youths within their community.
HISTORY
Bohlale Youth Club was established in 2006 and was registered as a non-profit organisation in the very same year. Since its establishment they have managed to reach approximately 3 000 youths in and around Kroonstad in different schools.

Their main objectives are to create awareness about matters that are negatively affecting the youth in Kroonstad and South Africa in general. Since 2006 Bohlale Youth Club has educated many youths about HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse and have witnessed a marked decrease, especially in teenage pregnancy, which keeps them motivated to continue.

PROGRAMMES
  1. HIV/AIDS programme: the organisation visits schools in the area and educates youths about HIV/AIDS and encourages them to know their statuses through HIV/AIDS testing.
  2. Teenage Pregnancy Awareness programme: the organisation encourages teenagers to refrain from sexual activities, and to use protection if they are sexually active. Youths are encouraged to concentrate on their studies because the future of South Africa is in their hands.
  3. Substance Abuse Awareness programme: youths are educated and warned about the dangerous effects drugs can have on their health and lives in general. They are also educated and given information that they can use and pass on to their peers. They are encouraged to partake in sporting activities instead of engaging themselves in drugs because they can end up in jail, dead, or infected with diseases.
STAFF
The organisation employs approximately 16 temporary staff members, who do not receive any form of payment due to lack of funds.

FUNDERS

The organisation does not have any funders.

CHALLENGES

The organisation’s main challenge is funding. Due to lack of funding, many members leave them. When they started they had about 30 members but currently only have 16. They also face transport challenges, resulting in members having to pay their own transport costs. The organisation is also in need of office space to perform their day-to-day activities.
