Bula Mahlo is situated in Badimong, Mentz along the road between Polokwane and Tzaneen in the Limpopo province. It was funded in November 2003 by community member Maria Malatgi and in 2006 the organisation was recognised and funded by the Department of Health. The organisation has evolved a lot since the time it was established.
Starting out as a Home Based Care provider conducted from the home of the founder it soon extended the service to include a Drop In Centre for orphans and vulnerable children. At present the Home Based Care branch is renting its own office while the children are accommodated at four different sites in order to avoid too long travelling distances, but the administration is still run from Maria Malatgis home.
The work of Bula Mahlo is carried out by 43 full time volunteers and the organisation reaches approximately 250 home based care patients and 700 children. Due to the vast dispersion of the service recipients, the home based carers struggle to be able to visit the patients regularly. The organisation does not have access their own transport and when the weather is too bad they are sometimes not able to reach out with care and food parcels.
Bula Mahlo’s plans for the future are to build more on the main site for the Drop in Centre, which is their own land. In that way they can draw together the different activities so as to facilitate the monitoring of the work and also to avoid the cost of paying rent. They have also secured an additional piece of land and are preparing to start a food garden.
