About the speaker
Pundy Pillay works as a free-lance economist. He is also a Visiting Professor in the Institute for Social Development, University of the Western Cape; the Centre for Social Development in Africa at the University of Johannesburg and the School of Public and Development Management, Wits University. Previous positions include Senior Research Economist for RTI International; Head of the Policy Unit, the Presidency, South Africa; Executive Director, Financial & Fiscal Commission, South Africa; and Senior Lecturer, University of Cape Town.  His research interests are in the economics of the social sectors (particularly education, labour markets and poverty) and public finance.

About the presentation
The presentation will review the findings on a research project in eight Southern African countries. The study makes the case for increased investment in universities in particular, and higher education in general, with a view to enhancing economic growth and broader economic development. The presentation will examine, inter alia, the links between HE and growth; HE, innovation and the knowledge economy; and higher education, social development, and inequality. Finally, it will show the challenges facing African policy makers in both higher education and the economic policy-making arena.”
