CSG roll out to 18 Print E-mail
acess_logoThe announcement today by the President of the roll out of the child support grant to all children has been hailed by ACESS, the coalition of organizations working for the extension of social security for children. He said “ Government will sustain and expand social expenditure, including progressively extending access to the Child Support Grant to children to 18 years of age and reducing the age eligibility for old age pension to 60 years for men”.

‘This is an incredibly important step for children in South Africa. We want to welcome and applaud this move. It will mean an extra 3 million children receiving a small, but important, boost to their hopes and dreams. We believe that it will not just mean that children don’t go to bed hungry, but that there will be a little money to take them further down the road to their aspirations, whether that means a trip to the library, or the football pitch. It comes at a particularly difficult time economically, and will relieve worried parents,

The Child Support Grant is currently only available to children (whose parents and caregivers are not able to provide for them) up to the age of 15.  As a matter of fact 3million of these teenagers don’t have money for a nutritious daily meal and often end up dropping out of school, increasing their chances of being condemned to a life of poverty.
