Founded almost 18 years ago and comprising a handful of dedicated staff members and fieldworkers based in Benoni, the Eastern Cricket Union aims to develop the game of cricket in Ekurhuleni and unite local cricket teams.
History of the Union The Eastern Cricket Union (previously the North Eastern Transvaal Board and Eastern Transvaal Cricket Union) was founded on 12 June 1991 and became an affiliate of the United Cricket Board of South Africa in the same year. In 2003 and 2007 the Union was part of the successful hosting of the under 19 World Cup squad at the Willowmoore Park cricket stadium. Staff The Union operates from a provincial office in Benoni in the East Rand and comprises nine staff members and ten fieldworkers. Funding The Union’s primary funders are Standard Bank, MTN, PG Bison, National Lottery, Supersport Series, Resolution Health, Southern Sun and Coca-Cola. Challenges Some of the major challenges facing the Union include the maintenance of their facilities in townships. These facilities are often vandalised due to a lack of security at stadiums. Working with others The Eastern Cricket Union relies on partnerships with institutions like the Department of Sports and Recreation, Municipalities and schools to achieve their mission. They have very good relations with their partners and are content with the working relationships. Programmes (a) Coaching clinics: Fieldworkers visit different areas in Ekurhuleni to help players improve their skills, and also to spot talent. (b) Coaching courses: Trainers are developed, which in turn helps them impart their skills to aspiring coaches. The Union provides resources like food, clothing and money to players who live in poorer areas in Ekurhuleni. Contacts Leonard Rajaga Paul Eastern Cricket Union Tel: 011 746 9000 Fax: 011 421 4463 |
