Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the welfare sector render services to vulnerable people in situations where there is family disintegration, crime, child abuse and abandonment, alcohol and drug abuse, mental illness, neglect of the aged, people becoming disabled, children who are abused, abandoned or orphaned as a result of the HIV and AIDS pandemic. This includes statutory services.During the Minister of Social Development’s budget speech in August 2009, Dr Radebe declared a 5% increase in subsidy tariffs for NGOs in the welfare sector. In the last 16 years, the KNZ Province has awarded only 8 subsidy increases to NGO’s in the welfare sector On Friday 28 August 2009, social service workers from NGO’s in the welfare sector in Durban and other major cities throughout the country will march to demand Equal Pay for Equal Work. In Durban a memorandum will be handed to the KZN Provincial Ministers of Social Development and Finance. The memoranda will request that URGENT attention by the Ministers be given to the following:
