Active ImageFAMSA, A Non-Governmental Organisation whose mission is to support individuals, families, organisations, communities and society to build, restore and sustain functional relationships.
Presents:
A one-day Family Therapy Conference focusing on therapeutic approaches to working with families
Friday the 13th of May 2011

Belmont Conference Centre: Rondebosch
This conference highlights the diversity in family therapy, exploring different therapeutic modalities utilised by counsellors when working with families:
Narrative family therapy; Family Constellations (work of Bert Hellinger); McMasters Family Therapy; and Working Systemically with Families.
The conference offers counsellors from a range of counselling backgrounds the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the four presenters who are both well respected and recognised professionals.

Topic 1: Narrative Therapy with families within the South African context
Narrative therapy has been introduced to the realm of therapy in the mid-1980’s by two family therapists: Michael White from Adelaide, Australia and David Epston from Auckland, New Zealand.
Narrative therapy is based on the notion that we generate stories in an effort to make sense of our lives and the circumstances in which we find ourselves.
I will use case examples to illustrate the application of Narrative Therapy in the context of working with families.

Elize Morkel is an experienced registered Clinical and Counselling Psychologist working in private practice in Somerset West.
Since 1999 she has been involved in Narrative Therapy training of therapists from various disciplines who work in a diversity of contexts.
She has conducted workshops in Southern Africa, the USA and Europe and has hosted workshops for international trainers.
Elize is co-editor of the book Matchboxes, butterflies and angry foots: Narratives of Therapy with children and young people of South Africa.
She holds an MA (Counselling psychology from Stellenbosch University, MTh in Practical Theology (Unisa) and is currently finalizing a DTh (Practical Theology) dissertation entitled Pastoral participation in transformation at the University of Stellenbosch.

Topic 2: McMasters Family Therapy
The McMaster model of family therapy is one of many models of systemic family therapy that developed between the 50’s and late 70’s in North America (Canada).
One of the main contributions of this model has been in the assessment of the family in terms of their problem-centred approach.
The underlying assumption is that the functioning of the family is affected by the pressures and stresses that impact on the system.
The assumption is that the most vulnerable member of the system will usually express the symptom, i.e. notion of someone being symptomatic of something not functioning well in the system rather than something intrinsically wrong with a member of the family.
This is a vital distinction that the family systemic approach offers.
That is to take the responsibility of the symptom off a person and attribute it to a system that is experiencing difficulties.

Cecilia K Robins is a Clinical Psychologist who trained at McMaster University in Canada in Family Therapy.
She is registered with the Professional Board for Psychology.
She works mostly in Private Practice and also trains the Clinical Masters students at UCT in family therapy.
She has been facilitating the McMaster Training courses at FAMSA for the past 6 years, as well as offering monthly supervision to the Famsa counsellors.

Topic 3: Family Constellations
Family Constellations developed by Bert Hellinger, originated in a group context and are now also applied to individual and couple therapy sessions.
They include the use of a genogram and embodied externalisation of the client family system over many generations to make family patterning and dynamics visible, and assist the client in developing solution images that bring a greater sense of belonging, balance and order in the system.
This methodology also presents a fusion of African traditional cosmology and western family therapy models.

As well as private practice and facilitator training, Tanja has therapeutic and organisational consulting experience in multicultural NGO settings in South Africa, including organisations involved with HIV, trauma, political violence and addiction.
Tanja is a member the International Systemic Constellations Association (ISCA) and has lectured and presented papers both locally and internationally on the subject.
