  • The Forum – National Welfare, Social Service and Development Forum (also referred to as NWSSDF)
  • DoSD – Department of Social Development
  • NACOSS – National Coalition of Social Services (a strategic partner of The Forum)
  • JSC – Joint Strategic Committee (The joint venture body of The Forum & NACOSS)
  • NLDTF – National Lottery Distribution (Trust) Fund
  • NLB – National Lotteries Board (Trustee of the NLDTF, Statutory reference – Act No. 57 of 1997)
  • Non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) are non-profit, voluntary operated bodies which are “concerned with the betterment of the society or the individual” (White Paper for Social Welfare, 1997:99). In South Africa the term has tended to be understood, particularly in the period prior to 1994, as excluding organisations which receive government subsidy.
  • A community-based organisation (CBO) is an NGO, typically small and relatively informal, established through voluntary initiative within a community to address specific local needs or problems.
  • NPO - Non Profit Organisation – Statutory definition (Non-profit organisations Act No. 71 of 1997)
  • CSO – Civil Society Organisation
  • FBO – Faith-Based Organisation
  • Social services - organisations, facilities and programs set up by government and/or voluntary initiative, to promote the wellbeing and development of people, and to provide protection, support and/or opportunities to those who are vulnerable or in crisis. Together with social policies and legislation, they form the social welfare system.
  • Social work – the “professional service of a social worker aimed at the promotion of social function of individuals, groups and communities” (White Paper for Social Welfare, 1997:97). A social worker is a person qualified to practice the social work profession, for which purpose, within the South African context, he/she is required to be registered by the Interim Council for Social Work.
  • A welfare organisation or voluntary welfare organisation is a community-sponsored body registered in terms of the National Welfares Act to deliver social services. Such bodies are often state-subsidised, and many undertake statutory social services, although they are independently managed.
  • The formal welfare sector comprises the social services operated by the government and the registered welfare organisations.
