Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December. The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights. This makes Wednesday, 10 December, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To mark this historic occasion, The National Welfare Forum invites you to support the Every Human Has Rights campaign and be part of a global initiative to change the world. (Every Human Has Rights, http://www.everyhumanhasrights.org) You can also read the Bill of Rights enshrined in the Constitution and spread the word about our rights and ways to make sure they are fulfilled. (http://www.info.gov.za/documents/constitution/1996/96cons2.htm ) We leave you with the words of the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, “Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation, and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime.... Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.” (10 December 2006) Sources: Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_Day Every Human Has Rights, http://www.everyhumanhasrights.org |
