Iketsetseng Self Help Association of Disabled Print E-mail
iketsetsengIketsetseng Self Help Association of Disabled is a non-profit organisation formed by disabled people to help and support each other. So many people living with disabilities are unemployed even though they are capable of doing the job. But because they are disabled they are discriminated against and are regarded as incompetent.  Iketsetseng Self Help Association of Disabled aims to help make disabled people employable through training. History
Iketsetseng Self Help Association of Disabled was established in 1992 and registered in 2003 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping the disabled recognise their employment dreams. The name “Iketsetseng” means “Do it for yourself”. It serves to motivate its members and remind them that anything is possible if they put their minds to it.

Programmes
Training Programme: the organisation trains and educates their members to do hands-on work like beading jewellery like bracelets, earrings, and necklaces.
Home Based Care Programme: the organisation visits members who can’t do anything for themselves anymore. They check up on them and ensure they are getting sufficient care. If not, they contact family members to take them to care centres. They also provide physiotherapy to help increase activity, thus motivating them to make a positive life out of their disabilities.

Staff
The organisation employs two permanent staff members (a bookkeeper and co-ordinator), and one volunteer who helps at the centre.

Funders
Currently they are being funded by the National Development Agency.

Challenges
They are currently experiencing transport problems and are in need of a vehicle. Most of their members use wheelchairs and when it rains they are unable to use taxis to arrive at the centre. They are also not able to push themselves. A vehicle would help alleviate this problem.
The other challenge is accommodation. The building that they are working from is not big enough to accommodate everyone as well as those who need close care.
Obtaining funds remains the most challenging factor, however. Funds received from the National Development Agency are not enough get a bigger venue, transport, and hire more staff.
They are also in need of marketing skills. Although they are making beads and selling them, they lack the necessary marketing skills to really succeed.
