International Programmes Specialist R288,000 – R384,000 per annum cost to company based in Cape Town or Johannesburg, starting mid 2011About Sonke With a full-time staff of 44 people working from offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, Sonke works across Africa to strengthen government, civil society and citizen capacity to support men and boys to take action to promote gender equality, prevent domestic and sexual violence and reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS. In this way the organisation contributes to the development of societies in which men, women, youth and children can enjoy equitable, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of just and democratic societies. International Programmes Unit The International Programmes and Networks Unit within Sonke aims to develop and consolidate coherent national, regional and international networks of civic organisations and activists to build capacity, advocate for, and take gender transformative work with men and boys to scale at all levels. The main focus of this work is through the MenEngage Alliance, and in particular the MenEngage Africa Network for which Sonke is the regional co-ordinator (see www.menengage.org). About the position Sonke is looking for a committed and innovative individual to join this unit as the International Programmes Specialist. This person will report to the International Programmes Co-ordinator, and will be a crucial member of Sonke’s team. In particular he/she will provide project management and technical input for two new projects: the Learning Centre Initiative; and the MenEngage Africa Training Initiative. The Learning Centre Initiative, a new partnership between Sonke and The Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU), will support project sites in Uganda and Zambia to develop their work to engage boys and men in sexual and reproductive health (SRH). In addition, Sonke will lead the Initiative’s strong agenda of communications, advocacy, and research, and will work to increase technical and theoretical understanding on men as clients and partners in SRH. The MenEngage Africa Training Initiative seeks to expand the skills and knowledge among male and female civil society practitioners and policy makers on engaging men and boys in gender equality, and build a network of gender justice advocates across Africa. This initiative will likely provide courses on a range of issues, including sexual violence, HIV and SRH, and on different topics, such as community mobilisation, technical assistance, and policy and advocacy work. The position requires full-time residence in the Cape Town or Johannesburg office. Skills and Responsibilities Learning Centre Initiative 1. Establishing the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) funded Learning Centre Initiative as part of the MenEngage Africa Training Initiative 2. Overall coordination of the RFSU Learning Centre Initiative, including oversight, support and capacity building of Learning Centre sites (Uganda and Zambia); facilitating and leading on Initiative planning and budgeting; constant communication with partners; field support to partners; project monitoring and evaluation; liaison and reporting 3. Coordination of Sonke’s direct programme activities under the RFSU Learning Centre Initiative, including advocacy and communications work 4. Providing technical knowledge and technical leadership to the RFSU Learning Centre Initiative on the issue of engaging men in sexual and reproductive health MenEngage Africa Training Initiative 5. Co-ordinating the development and implementation of the MenEngage Africa Training Initiative (MATI), including: desk research; seeking feedback from MenEngage partners; developing, pilot testing and finalising the MATI curriculum; identifying and recruiting resource persons in conjunction with partners; developing partnerships to support the MATI; supporting the participant recruitment process; co-ordinating logistics for the MATI residential sessions; supporting follow-up processes and mentorship; developing an e-learning module 6. Linking the MATI to other MenEngage Africa processes. Supporting other MenEngage Africa activities 7. Undertaking research to support MenEngage Africa’s work, such as its policy advocacy 8. Supporting training courses for MenEngage Africa country networks to build their capacity on a range of issues, including research and monitoring and evaluation 9. Providing feedback to colleagues on MenEngage Africa country network workplans, budgets, progress reports and other related documents 10. Supporting Sonke/MenEngage Africa meetings, such as regional consultative events with partner organisations 11. Support the development of the MenEngage network within Africa, including the development of tools to support governance and co-ordination within country networks Qualifications
