About the speaker:

Trudie Knijn is professor at the department of Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University (the Netherlands). She is co-chairing the European Network for Social Policy Analysis (ESPAnet) and member of the Executive Committee of the European Network of Excellence RECWOWE (Reconciling Work and Welfare). For the faculty of social and behavioural science she coordinates the projects of master students in South Africa and develops research projects with NGO’s and South African universities.

About the Topic

Social citizenship and redistribution of resources develops in the context of the so-called ‘welfare mix’ between the state, the market and the family/community. Each of those institutions has it advantages and disadvantages. Too much involvement of one of those institutions results in an unbalanced social support. Nevertheless the state appears to be the only institutional arena for equalizing gender relations. What are the implications for social support for HIV positive people if family relations are dominant, the market cares less and the state is a weak and fragile partner? Lessons from research in several South African NGO’s on the potential de-gendering aspects of social support will be presented
