About the speakers:
Dr Rowland is a long standing activist in the disability movement of South Africa. He was the National Executive Director of the SA National Council for the Blind and a long-serving chairperson of Disabled People South Africa. He has held many other positions in the field of disability locally and internationally including president of the World Blind Union and chairperson of the International Disability Alliance.
Lauren Graham is a researcher and PhD candidate at the Centre for Social Development in Africa. She was the lead researcher on the Poverty & Disability study that the centre conducted.
About the presentation
In 2009 the CSDA in partnership with Dr. Rowland and DFID conducted a study amongst disabled and chronically ill people in eight of the poorest wards of Johannesburg. The study sheds new light on how to better understand the link between poverty and disability and makes recommendations to inform policy and programming.
