Workshop Content: “Rape, it’s politics and treatment – working with adult rape survivors”Understanding rape is a fundamental aspect of working in the trauma field. The occurrence of rape in South Africa is at a very high frequency and clearly associated with the spread of HIV/Aids. There are many questions that are common to people working in the field, such as: how is rape defined officially? Is rape and the response to it similar or different from other types of trauma? Should rape survivors be counselled across gender? Is there a good early intervention that is likely to be of most value in working with adult rape survivors? Other important questions relate to the criminal justice system and how the law deals with rape, both the perpetrators and the victims; also issues regarding the short and long term impact of engaging with the criminal justice system in dealing with rape. This workshop will engage with these questions and others that emerge from working together to try and understand and be more effective in this complex, distressing and all too common challenge that we face in our field of work.
