Invitation to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Provincial Methodology Workshop- Free State, North West and Northern Cape You are cordially invited to the provincial MDG methodology workshop for the 2010 country report which is scheduled for 30 - 31 March 2010 and will be held in Free State. This is the third provincial workshop and is intended to cover Free State, North West and Northern Cape provinces. The details of the venue for this workshop will be communicated together with the agenda in due course. As part of the UN MDG reporting requirement, a highly participatory approach to the MDG process has been adopted for the forthcoming MGD report. A national workshop took place in November 2009. This workshop is one of a series of provincial workshops planned for the year. The first workshop intended for the Cape provinces is planned for 10-11 March, a second workshop intended for Mpumalanga and Limpopo is planned for 17-18 March. These workshops are expected to be a gathering of the largest possible group of stakeholders. The workshop will include representatives from government departments, the NGO sector, academia, civil society and the UN country team. Six working groups have been established on: (1) Poverty and hunger (Goal 1); (2) Gender and education (Goal 2&3); (3) Child mortality and maternal health (Goal 4&5); (4) Health (Goal 6); (5) Environment (Goal 7); and (6) Economy (Goal 8). The main purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the domesticated MDG targets and indicators done at the national workshop. The indicator domestication process had considered the relevance of MDG indicators and their adaptation to national needs, inclusion of additional indicators important to the South African circumstance, computation of the indicators, and adaptation of targets. Additionally, the issue of appropriate data sources for use in populating the indicators was discussed. Prominent leaders and experts in the field have been invited to lead discussions around the six identified themes. Considering the national importance of the MDG country report, it is requested that you accord your department’s participation the highest priority. Due to limited resources Statistics South Africa requests the participation of only one participant per department.
