Invite to Gauteng Democratic Left Consultative Conference, 20 March 2010 Print E-mail
Dear Comrade

Re: INVTE TO GAUTENG DEMOCRATIC LEFT CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE

The Conference of the Democratic Left has been in the making since October 2008 when about 60 activists from across the country came together to discuss the crisis of national liberation politics. Since then this initiative has evolved into a process of national dialogue which aims to unify anti-capitalist and progressive social forces around concrete struggles. The CDL seeks to provide a platform to deliberate on the crisis confronting the world and South African society. Deepening inequality, growing and ‘permanent unemployment’, poverty, environmental degradation
and exploitation in the world are realities in South Africa.

Moreover, we seek to provide a platform to find convergence around anti-capitalist and transformative alternatives emerging from grass roots struggles and movements engaged in service delivery issues, labour struggles, environmental struggles, solidarity economy movement struggles, human rights struggles, international solidarity struggles and the various other struggles confronting South Africa and the world.

You and/or your organisation are invited to attend a Gauteng consultative conference of the Democratic Left. This is a build up event to the national conference. Similar consultative conferences are also happening in other parts of the country.

Date: Saturday, 20th March, 2010
Registration: 8-9am
Venue: Wits University, Dorothy Susskind Auditorium, John Moffat Building.

This provincial consultative conference will debate, discuss and explore themes that have been emerging in the CDL process since its inception. This will be a long day of deliberation. We want to use this platform as a space to have open debate on political perspectives on the crisis, grass roots struggles, ideological themes, campaigns and a strategic way forward for the CDL.

Based on input from various movements, political organisations and individuals supporting this process we are planning to have panels on the following:
  • The Global and National Crisis: Challenges for the Left;
  • Labour and Community Struggles: Building Solidarity Around Immediate Demands;
  • Alternatives for Transformation: Eco-socialism panel, Solidarity Economy panel, Meeting Basic Needs: Water, Food and Land panel, International Solidarity panel.
  • Learning about political forms: the UDF experience, social movements and International Green and Left parties.
On Sunday March 21st all involved with and supporting the CDL are invited to join a protest march of the Sharpeville community to their local municipality.

We look forward to your participation. Please confirm your participation before 14th March by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
