Young people make up almost half the population of South Africa and statistics show they are largely unemployed, functionally illiterate and at high risk of HIV infection because of high risk behaviours and recreational drug use. Not a pretty picture and a sad indictment on what future we build in Mzansi. Several organizations have been involved for a long while now in trying to change the paucity of choices young people have in Mzansi and finally, the state has heeded calls for a comprehensive policy to be put in place to guide the development of young people.
The National Youth Policy 2008 2013 3.30 Mb has been approved by Cabinet as a discussion document. The desired outcome of the policy is to produce "empowered young people who are able to realise their full potential and understand their roles and responsibilities in making meaningful contribution to the development of a non-racial and prosperous South Africa".
In order to ensure finalization of the policy; interested individuals, groups, organizations and communities wishing to make written input! Comments and submissions on the National Youth Policy are requested by no later than 30 January 2009 to:
Ms RB Hlagala, Senior Policy Analyst in the Presidency: Youth Desk
Private Bag x 1000, Pretoria, 0001.
