Makhulong a Matala is a subsidiary company of the Johannesburg Housing Company (JHC) devoted to community development. Makhulong focuses on activities which have a basic and long term impact on the growth of communities in and around JHC buildings. Makhulong was established as a dedicated entity to ensure that the social and human asset building focus of JHC remains properly funded and resourced.History Makhulong a Matala is a non-profit subsidiary of the Johannesburg Housing Company developed as part of the JHC’s Community Development Department which started operating in 1999. Makhulong was established in 2004 to ensure that the department remains focused on the social issues close to the JHC’s heart. Programmes (A) Children and Youth Development Programme is available to primary school learners who reside in the JHC buildings. It offers them assistance with their homework. There are six learning centres in the inner city, with the possibility of two more being established before the end of the 2008 – 2009 financial years. (B) The Tenant Support Service is aimed at educating tenants about their roles and responsibilities and facilitating training to build tenants’ life skills and income-earning opportunities. This is done through Tenant Education Workshops. (C) The eKhaya Neighbourhood Programme is made up of the JHC and the various property owners in Hillbrow. The programme gathered other property owners in the inner city to clean up and provide security around the area, making it cleaner and safer for their tenants. Guards now patrol streets in addition to security from the buildings and a patrol car. Working with others Makhulong a Matala is willing to work with individuals and organisations across the spectrum to ensure management and maintenance of the streets and buildings as demonstrated with the eKhaya programme. Makhulong’s general manager, Lindi Malinga, is happy with the success the programme has exhibited. “eKhaya has succeeded in bringing down crime, controlling grime and engaging local council departments to ensure proper management of the streets. It has been recognised by the City of Johannesburg, and inspired a further three neighbourhood management initiatives in the Hillbrow /Berea / Joubert Park areas,” she says. Funders Most of Makhulong’s activities are funded by the JHC. The Children and Youth Development Programme is funded by the JET Education Services.
