Mandela Day in Kroonstad Print E-mail

The National Welfare Forum (NWF) is getting behind the Mandela Day initiative and is calling on other NGOs and the business world to join in.

In his State of the Nation address, South African president, Jacob Zuma, called on members of the public and the rest of the world to wholeheartedly support Mandela Day by spending at least 67 minutes of their time doing something useful within their communities, especially among the less fortunate. This is to commemorate the 67 years during which Nelson Mandela was politically active.

The day is being celebrated on Mandela’s 91st birthday, which is July 18.

Showing its support, the entire staff team of the National Office will be going to assist Phekong Health Centre & Art and Culture in Kroonstad. The team will be painting the inside of a building donated to the Centre.

To date, at least 10 other individuals and local architectural firm, bd Studio have signed up to help Phekong but we still need at least 100 litres of good quality white enamel paint, associated painting materials, a geyser and heaters. The NWF urges business to take up the challenge by sponsoring items and because the NWF is a registered PBO, you can even claim a tax break!

The Mandela Day initiative is an annual global movement for positive change made by small actions, inspiring people to embrace Mandela’s values. It is a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

About Phekong Health Centre & Art and Culture
Phekong is a non-profit organisation that provides support and aid to people suffering from HIV, AIDS, chronic diseases and neglect by their families. It started when the Neighbourhood Watches in Kroonstad attempting to stop conflicts during their door-to-door visit saw that people suffering from HIV/AIDS, the terminally ill and senior citizens were being neglected by their families.
