Maokeng Care Givers Projects Print E-mail
maokeng-care-giversMaokeng Care Givers Projects was established by a group of youths in the Kroonstad area to help create awareness of HIV/AIDS among the youth. It also aims to educate people about the prevention and treatment of the disease. The name Maokeng – also an area in Kroonstad – was chosen to represent the youth living in that community.

History
Maokeng Care Givers Projects is a non-profit organisation which was established in 2006 to help the community of Maokeng in Kroonstad offer home-based care to people infected with HIV/AIDS. It was formed to educate the community at large about prevention and treatment of the disease. The organisation also encourages abstinence as a preventative measure, and urges the youth to know their statuses. Programmes
1. HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme: the organisation educates the youth and community at large about the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
2. Home Based Care Programme: the organisation trains others to be care givers and educates them about taking care of a person infected with HIV/AIDS.

Staff
Maokeng employs four permanent staff members who get monthly salaries, as well as approximately eight volunteers who get stipend for their services.

Funders
Currently they are being solely sponsored by the Department of Health to sustain them and help the community of Maokeng and Kroonstad at large.

Challenges
Lack of funding: the funds received from the Department of Health are not always enough to cover all expenses. The organisation’s staff often pays out of their pockets for certain expenses. They do embark on fund-raising initiatives like organising games for the community and charging a joining fee which helps sustain the organisation.
