The Molteno Project is a non-government organisation whose aim is to improve the literacy levels and teaching processes within the first four years of schooling. The project develops and implements teacher development programmes through educational materials in African languages as well as English and aims to transform classroom practices in order to maximise on learner performance and achievement. Programmes (a) The Breach to Literacy programme encourages learners to read and write in their own home language. (b) The Breach to English programme involves teaching English to learners who study English as their second language. The Molteno Project is committed to being a world-class organisation that unlocks human potential through provision of high quality literacy and adult education. History The Molteno Institute was established in 1974 by Professor Lauham and Mrs Dakile, who sought to improve the overall level of literacy on the continent. Today they have offices in several countries throughout Africa who are committed to rolling out their programmes. Staff The institute has 28 staff members dispersed all over the African continent. Most of them are based at the organisation’s head office in Johannesburg. Funding The Molteno Project is currently solely funded by the National Lottery Fund. Challenges As with most civil society organisations, the Molteno Institute’s biggest challenge is core funding. Most of the funding received is meant for short-term projects but impacts on Human Resources as well as the organisation’s long-term plans.
