Moqhaka Community Home Based Care Organisation was formed by a group of women to help the many people who are seriously ill and affected by HIV/Aids and need a proper care. The women were partly motivated to form this organisation because of the many women they had seen die from breast cancer. This could have been prevented and treated if they had had the necessary information about the disease, as well as good care.History Moqhaka Community Home Based Care Organisation was established in 2002 by a group of dedicated women, and was registered on 17 August 2004 as a recognised non-profit organisation. Their main objective (or the reason for the formation of the organisation) was to take care of the terminally ill who stay at home instead of going to hospitals. The women saw a need to counsel and encourage them to follow the correct medical procedures and thus live longer. Another reason for the organisation’s formation was to educate women about breast cancer. Many women died from the disease because they did not seek proper medical care, refused to go to hospital and were afraid of their breasts being removed. Programmes
Moqhaka employs four permanent staff members and about sixteen volunteers. Funders Since 2008 the organisation has been funded by the European Union. It is also sponsored by the Department of Health which started sponsoring them in 2006. Challenges The organisation has ongoing problems with sick people who refuse to go to hospital. Even when they are seriously ill, quite a few people are needed to get them into ambulances. Most of the time the organisation works together with the police to force them to seek medical attention.
