Mvula Trust Print E-mail

The Mvula Trust is a non-governmental organisation supporting water and sanitation development in South Africa. Since their inception they have disbursed over R300-million to countrywide water services programmes and projects and have rendered services to over a million South Africans who previously did not have access to either water or sanitation services.

Their vision is to build a South Africa, in which all can enjoy safe and affordable water and sanitation, ultimately contributing to good health and productive livelihoods.

History
The Mvula Trust was established in 1993 as a flexible, innovative and effective vehicle for supporting and complementing the work of the new democratic government in South Africa. Their aim is to improve the health and welfare of poor and disadvantaged South Africans in rural and peri-urban communities by increasing their access to safe and sustainable water sources and sanitation services. Today the Mvula Trust is regarded as the largest water and sanitation NGO in South Africa

Staff
Over 60 full-time staff members operate from a national office in Johannesburg, as well as from eight regional offices in the North West, Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu Natal (two offices), Eastern Cape (three offices) and the Free State.

Funding
The Mvula Trust is sustained with help from a range of income streams. Our regional offices work with local municipalities, providing infrastructure and support services to rural communities. The Mvula Trust is also an implementing agent for the Department of Water and Forestry (DWAF) and is supported on a project basis by donor organisations as well as corporate social investors. The Mvula Trust does not render profits for shareholders and any surpluses are reinvested into the organisation.

Challenges
The major challenge facing the Mvula Trust is the lack of core funding. Mvula has been relatively successful at raising ‘project’ funding but still face difficulties with ongoing funding for their work.

Working with others
The Mvula Trust relies on collaborative partnerships with a range of institutions and stakeholders in order to achieve their mission. They are actively seeking partnerships with other NGOs, funders, academic and research institutions as well as community based organisations. Please contact them if you would like to discuss a partnership.
