NGO Sector Endorses the Appointment of the New Health Minister Print E-mail

red-ribbon29 September 2008

The NGO Sector fully endorses the appointments of Ms Barbara Hogan as the Minister of Health and Dr Molefi Sefularo as her Deputy and congratulate President Kgalema Mothlante on the foresight displayed in making such appointments.

The NGO Sector is confident that Ms. Barbara Hogan has the ability to action vast improvements to the South African health system and fast track priorities in the response to the HIV pandemic.

Ms. Hogan has a long history of activism and community work beginning from the apartheid era, fighting for the freedom and human rights of the people of South Africa.  Ms. Hogan endorses an accelerated response to ARV roll-out and improved health care system. Hogan acknowledges the valuable contribution and partnerships that the NGO Sector could provide, along with other sectors to reach the goals laid out in the National Strategic Plan and put an end to the loss of lives. Over 2 million lives have been lost in South Africa due to AIDS related illnesses.

Hogan's biggest challenges will be to meet the treatment and prevention targets of the National Strategic Plan 2007-2011, integrate TB and HIV treatment, develop a feasible human resources plan for health workers and undo the considerable legacy of AIDS denialism left by her predecessor. The NGO sector look forward to a united revival and resurgence of all sectors, as displayed in late 2006 and early 2007 when SANAC was restructured and the NSP launched, prior to the untimely dismissal of Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge.
