Twenty community activists from around the province took part in the three-day workshop, which was facilitated by the Co-operative for Research and Education (CORE), an organisation with an 18-year track record on Community Development, CSO capacity building and HIV/AIDS activity. Participants’ progress will be measured and ongoing mentoring support will be provided by CORE. This initiative was the first of its kind in the Northern Cape, which is a historically disadvantaged province with limited human, financial and economic resources. It will provide community leaders with the capacity to advocate and lobby for change A second workshop on HIV/AIDS and home based care will be held in Upington later this year.
It is expected these workshops will allow the Northern Cape Forum to develop a combined approach to HIV/AIDS its prevention, treatment and care. This will build awareness, provide advocacy and home based care competency as well as allow others to be trained and take up the serious challenges posed by the pandemic. The work will be sustained by the ongoing campaigns and activities of lobbying and advocacy. |
