To help CBOs understand how to apply for NLDTF funding using the current application forms and application guidelines. i. To make sure CBOs have all the required supporting documentation ii. To assist CBOs in completing the application forms iii. If required, The Forum will consider covering the costs for postage or courier services to submit completed applications b. To record the details of CBOs that do not have the required documentation to apply for funding, c. To record the details of the missing or unavailable documentation, d. To invite these CBOs to participate in a capacity development initiative to enable them to meet these requirements for future funding opportunities. Proceedings The workshop was organised on 3rd October 2008 in Port Elizabeth by members of the National and Eastern Cape offices of The Forum, and was attended by 29 participants representing CBOs in the Port Elizabeth area. Workshop participants were welcomed by John Allen, the Eastern Cape Coordinator. He introduced Rajesh Latchman the National Coordinator and facilitator for the workshop to the participants. The first session then got off to an inspiring start with Rajesh thanking the participants for coming after such short notice. He thanked the provincial office of The Forum as well as The Forum Chairperson Ms. Beulah Lumkwana for organising the workshop in the province at short notice. He introduced Ms Tselane Moleba as part of the team that would be facilitating the forthcoming provincial workshops. “This is the pilot workshop and we are happy to have it here in Port Elizabeth”, he said. Rajesh gave an introduction to The Forum, its history and its role in South African Civil Society. He then went on to elaborate on why The Forum found it important to have these workshops. He then clarified the relationship between the NLDTF and The Forum as one of funder and funding recipient. Rajesh’s presentation emphasised that organisations must read and understand the guidelines before starting the application process. He then went through the guidelines with the participants making sure that they understood the documents. He went on to explain what is needed by the National Lotteries Fund when making an application, and which supporting documents are required and why. The next session of the workshop focussed on completing the application form and the annexes. Tselane went through the application Form 05/1 in detail. Then Rajesh went through the business and implementation plan. The final presentation was made by Rajesh, focussing on the budget and highlighting some simple steps that can be taken to improve the quality of the application. He addressed the question of what will happen should you not be truthful or consistent in your application. Rajesh concluded by saying that although the application may seem very difficult in the beginning it gets easier every time you practice it. He requested that organisations fill in the application form with pencil the first time before using ink and to go on practising. Conclusion The Forum Chairperson, Ms Beulah Lumkwana, closed the workshop with a speech thanking the participants and The Forum for one of the most important and informative workshops in the community. She expressed her satisfaction with the level of participation and the amount of work covered. It is hoped that this workshop, and the provincial office, will provide support for CBOs in the area and hopefully develop a 'sense of community' amongst participants. It is hoped that CBOs will support each other; after all they all serve the same community, and one organisation’s success is the whole community’s success. |
