While the Climate Change negotiations focus on emissions reduction, technology transfer, financing and other political agreements, it is important not to lose sight of the real impact that climate change has on real people - and what communities around the world are doing….

This event is one of a number of such events taking place around the world in the lead-up to the climate change negotiations in Copenhagen in December.

It will be an exciting combination of heartfelt testimony, performance art and input from leaders, activists and climate change experts. There will be numerous opportunities for the media to actively engage.

Programme Monday 5th October

10:30-12:30  Pan-African Climate Change and Poverty HearingsArchbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will lead a panel of distinguished guests who will hear the testimonies of climate change witnesses from across Africa. The hearing will be hosted and facilitated by Judge Denis Davis, a Judge of the High Court of South Africa and Professor of Law.

12:30-13:45 Lunch

13:45-16:00  The afternoon session will include:
  • Khayelitsha theatre group
    This group of young people has taken the initiative to learn about climate change and present it in a fun, lively and creative way.
  • Talk by Lewis Pugh (swimmer, explorer and climate change activist)
    Two years ago Lewis Pugh undertook the first swim across the North Pole to raise awareness about the abnormal melting of the Arctic sea ice as a result of climate change. In this talk, Lewis will share his experiences from these expeditions and highlight the implications of climate change.
  • Feedback from Climate Change and Poverty Hearings held in Durban and Johannesburg.
  • Inspirational responses to climate change from others
  • A chance for you to ask questions and send your message to Copenhagen.
  • Wrap up and closing remarks.
