Phekong Health Centre & Art and Culture Print E-mail
gladys_webPhekong Health Centre & Art and Culture is a non-profit organisation which was started in aid of the many people, including senior citizens, who were suffering from HIV/AIDS, chronic diseases and neglect by their families.

The name “Phekong” was chosen, which means “a place of cure”. It originated from the earlier conflicts in Kroonstad when Neighbourhood Watches, during their door-to-door visits trying to stop the conflicts, saw that many people were suffering from HIV/AIDS and that some of the senior citizens and terminally ill were being neglected by their families. This touched them deeply, and led to the formation of this organisation.

This organisation is extremely important to its chairperson as she was once one of the members of the Neighbourhood Watch organisation and also had a daughter who was suffering from HIV/Aids.

History
Phekong Health Centre & Art and Culture was established in 2003 to try and help the community of Kroonstad, and also help build the youth to become leaders of tomorrow. They also aim to create awareness about HIV/AIDS by encouraging the community to test and know their status.

Programmes

  1. Home Based Care Programme. The organisation trains other people to be home-based carers and encourages those who are already taking care of sick people to keep on doing what they are doing.
  2. Training Programme. The organisation trains and unites youth in helping them to focus on positive aspects like their studies and staying away from crime. This is achieved by encouraging activities like sports and dancing. This is how the Sports against Crime, Xenophobia and Drug Abuse Programme was initiated.
  3. Sports against Crime, Xenophobia and Drug Abuse Programme. The organisation uses sport as a form of awareness against crime, xenophobia and drug abuse and also to keeps the youth busy and off the streets.
  4. Holistic Support Programme. The organisation gives support to families being headed by children due to the death or chronic illness of one or both parents.
  5. Cultural Dance Programme. The organisation educates and trains both old and young about cultural dance moves in order to keep them fit, busy and entertained. “The battle of generations”, where the two age groups compete against each other, takes place after they are fully trained.
  6. Candle Light Awareness Programme. The organisation lights candles as a form of creating awareness and showing support and recognition to people who are living with HIV/Aids.
Staff
The organisation has approximately 30 staff members, all of whom are volunteers who don’t obtain any form of remuneration.

Funders
Currently there are no actual funders, but the organisation does receive food parcel donations from Pick ‘n Pay and Shoprite. They have also received donations of furniture and hospital equipment from Military and Correctional Services.

Challenges
Funds are a major problem. The organisation has managed to secure an old hospital building to be used as accommodation for orphans, people living with HIV/Aids, those who are suffering from chronic diseases and senior citizens, but lack the funds to renovate. Donations received from Military and Correctional Services will only be delivered once the building is in a good enough condition to operate.
