phela_o_phedisePhela O Phedise Isizwe is a non-profit organisation formed by the youth, for the youth in Sasolburg to educate and equip them with the enhancing life skills. The name ‘Phela O Phedise Isizwe’ means “live to help the nation”.

History
Phela O Phedise Isizwe was established in 2001 and registered on 17 February 2008. It aims to provide life skills training to youths in the area.

The organisation has had its share of up and downs, including losing many of its members to the likes of the Department of Health and other organisations. Despite this, however, they have achieved a lot by reaching over 2 000 youths and being voted as the runner-up for the Free State Community Builder of The Year Award in year 2007. They were awarded a certificate and also voted into the top five in the whole Free State province in the year 2003 because of their effective strategy (assisted by Price Waters Coopers).

 Programmes
  1. Home-based Care Programme, where youths are trained to be caregivers within their communities by the Department of Social Services Life Skills Programme.
  2. Life Skills Programme, which was introduced to enhance and equip youths with the necessary skills to help them succeed despite negative influences. The programme includes awareness against drug and substance abuse, gender violence, HIV/Aids and training is supported by the Department of Education with the help of Ms T Meyer.
Staff
The organisation has four semi-permanent members who keep the day-to-day programmes running. Those members consist of the chairperson, secretary, treasure, co-ordinator and programme organiser.

Funders
Currently the organisation does not have any funders and rely solely on the Department of Education and the Department of Social Services for the sponsorship of programme they wish to engage in. They currently obtain funds by offering typing and photocopying services to the community.

Challenges
  1. Members leave them for “greener pastures”. Due to a lack of funding, the organisation cannot afford to keep its members.
  2. Lack of funding makes working and achieving their goals very difficult.
