MEDIA RELEASE: In her keynote address to The Forum’s 6th General Assembly on 21st February 2008, Professor Ntomb’fikile Mazibuko examined to what extent social welfare beneficiaries in post-apartheid South Africa were becoming self-reliant, realizing their full human potential and contributing positively to national development. She urged civil society groups to focus on proposing alternative interventions to find a balance between social assistance and developmental initiatives, and suggested exploring ways in which models of intervention used in other development states could be adapted to address the social welfare challenges facing South Africa. Professor Ntomb’fikile Mazibuko is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Head of the College of Humanities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), as well as co-founder of The Forum.
