The Challenge

The global economy is in a state of decline with significant job losses and increasing hardship for people. Even prior to the recession, several economies, including South Africa's, exhibited jobless growth.

The euro zone is adopting increasing austerity, with drastic cuts to social spending. Japan is enduring a slump that has persisted for 15 years. And following on the stimulus program in 2009-10, China is now attempting to put the brakes on in order to subdue inflation. In the US, simply to restore the 9 million jobs lost during the recession would require a boom that produced jobs at twice the December 2010 rate for nearly 12 years.

In this difficult global context South Africa and other countries in Africa, need to enable more economic possibilities for their populations. Are formal jobs the only alternative ? How viable and sustainable are these ? Are there alternatives ? What economic opportunities are people creating for themselves ? What are the policy implications ?.
