The National Welfare Forum (NWF) is getting behind the Mandela Day initiative and is calling on other NGOs and the business world to join in.

In his State of the Nation address, South African president, Jacob Zuma, called on members of the public and the rest of the world to wholeheartedly support Mandela Day by spending at least 67 minutes of their time doing something useful within their communities, especially among the less fortunate. This is to commemorate the 67 years during which Nelson Mandela was politically active.

The day is being celebrated on Mandela’s 91st birthday, which is July 18.

Showing its support, the NWF will be sending a team from its National Office to assist one of its members, Phekong Health Centre & Art and Culture in Kroonstad. The team will be painting the inside of a building donated to the Centre.

While the NWF is assisting with this crucial task, Phekong is also in dire need of adequate plumbing, including a geyser to provide hot water and heaters for its wards. The NWF urges business to take up the challenge by making a worthy contribution to the Centre.

The Mandela Day initiative is the brainchild of 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. It is an annual global movement for positive change made by small actions, inspiring people to embrace Mandela’s values.

Mandela Day is a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.
