 Tshepang Support Organisation is a support group which motivates the community of Kroonstad – especially those living with HIV/AIDS. When the group was started, its members noticed that people were losing hope to live due to not knowing what to do if infected by the disease. Tshepang aims to combat this effect through education and training.History Tshepang Support Organisation was established in 2006 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping the community of Kroonstad – and especially those infected with HIV/AIDS – to not lose hope of conquering the disease. At the time, many people would go for HIV/AIDS tests and subsequently commit suicide if testing positive. The name ‘Tshepang’ means “Have hope”, and serves to encourage people who are living with the disease not to lose hope. Programmes 1. Home Based Care Programme: the organisation trains others to become care givers, and helps those who are sick at home and affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases. 2. Counselling Programme: the organisation counsels people who have family problems; those affected by HIV/AIDS and chronic diseases. 3. Training and Facilitation Skills Programme: the organisation trains care givers to be able to counsel other people and train them so that they too can pass on the information and skills. 4. Prevention of Mother to Child Programme: the organisation educates the youth and community at large about how to prevent the spread of infection – especially HIV/AIDS – to infants. They also advise on how to go about preventing mother-to-child transmission. Staff They have four permanent staff members comprising a project manager, co-ordinator, financial clerk and a professional nurse. Funders In 2008 the organisation signed a three-year contract to receive funding from the European Union. They are also funded by PECFA. Challenges They need training for their members to ensure their work is carried out properly. They also require more funding to cover their expenses and arrange for a proper venue and transport.
