Xikukwani Development Organisation Print E-mail

xikukwaniThis community development project is situated in Limpopo province in Xikukwana village, about 20 minutes drive from Giyani along the Malamulele main road. The organisation was established in December 1998 and was recognised and started to receive funding by the Provincial Department of Health in 2004. The project manager, Amukelani Flora Chauke, explains that the organisation was created in order to educate the community about different health issues, in particular HIV/AIDS and TB.

It was also an answer to the increasing numbers of childheaded families due to this pandemic and the fact that many parents have to leave the village in search for employment in the bigger cities. Lastly it was an initiative to create occupation for the many unemployed in the community. The project has been given a piece of land by the community but has not yet secured enough funds to build their own structure. At present they are hosted at the community centre where they share the space with other community initiatives.

Today Xikukwani has 39 full time volunteers and work with two main programs, Home Based Care and a Drop In Centre for orphans and vulnerable children. The service provided includes; identification of clients and referral to clinic and hospital, home visits to HIV/AIDS and TB patients and monitoring of prescribed treatment; identification of orphans, food provision and monitoring of school work, life skills training and recreational activities as well as coordinating joint support efforts from educators, social workers and the clinic. The organisation has 188 registered clients within the programs but the volunteers support the whole family of the client and also do awareness and campaigning in the community in general so the total number of service beneficiaries will be close to 1000.

The main challenge faced by the organisation is lack of money. Mrs Chauke is concerned since the funds only cover food and not other needs like school uniforms, clothes and blankets for the vulnerable children. Xikukwani is hoping to soon have raised enough money to build their own site so they can offer shelter to the many homeless children in the village.
