Lesedi Child Care Centre was established on 1 March 1999 by a group of community members saddened by the number of vulnerable children roaming the streets of Namakgale. After forming the centre, its volunteers discovered that most of the children had left home due to poverty or abuse, or were orphans heading their families. They had dropped out of school and some had even turned to prostitution to support their siblings. Lesedi aims to help and support these children.
History Lesedi Child Care Centre is a non-profit organisation which was registered as a recognised organisation in 2000. The name Lesedi means “a light”, which originated as a result of seeing too many children roaming the streets of Namakgale. The organisation decided on the name because of their dedication to showing the children the light by caring for them, encouraging them to go to school and to have dreams of becoming somebody in future. The centre’s main aim is to help vulnerable children through the trying phases of their lives. Even though the centre faced funding problems in the beginning, they were able to continue operating due to the generosity of local businesses who donated food parcels, stationery and clothes for the children. Programmes Income-generating Project Programme: The centre makes and sells adult nappies to local clinics, hospitals and the community. Cultural Activities Programme: The centre teaches children to write poems, sing and perform traditional dance. Feeding Scheme Programme: The centre feeds needy children three times a day. Educational Programme: Helping children with their homework and assignments. Staff Lesedi consists of about 13 employees: three are permanent staff members who get monthly salaries and the remaining ten are temporary staff members who get a stipend. They also have six volunteers who get stipend from time to time. Funders / donors Lesedi is currently funded by the Department of Social Development (DoSD). Challenges Finances: The number of children has increased to 117 in the centre, the majority of who are orphans. A lack of funding means the centre cannot function the way it should. Accommodation: The location from where the centre operates is not big enough to accommodate all the children in need. The local municipality and traditional leaders are also too slow in allocating sites. More and more children are approaching the centre after losing their parents to HIV/AIDS. The centre is thus in dire need of more accommodation.
